The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Best Start Network is proud to announce that they will be hosting a professional development Conference for Early Years Professionals on Saturday, May 15th, at General Vanier Intermediate School in Cornwall.

The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Best Start Network is the vehicle by which community partners collaborate in order to provide the best possible services to all children and their families.  The Best Start Network is led by the City of Cornwall in partnership with community agencies and organizations serving young children and their families such as education,
public health, child care, child protection services, services for
children with special needs, children’s mental health services, recreation programs, community and health services and other specialized services.

The “It Takes a Community to Raise a Child” Conference will begin with a Keynote Speech given by Dr. Charles E. Pascal, Special Advisor on Early Learning to Premier McGuinty.  Dr Pascal will present the highlights and recommendations from his “With our Best Future in Mind” report which was submitted to the Premier in June 2009.  The report offers a comprehensive plan of action for the future direction of early learning in Ontario, including the implementation of the full-day early learning for four and five year olds.

The full day training event also includes an extensive program of morning and afternoon workshops on varied topics of interest, available in both French and in English.  These workshops are loaded with a wealth of knowledge and resources on best practices and intervention strategies for promoting inclusion.  Professional development workshops will be delivered by local and regional trainers who will offer practical information, resources and tools on topics such as ADD-ADHD, autism, behaviour management techniques, circle time strategies, inclusion practices, self care, speech and language development, and visual learning. This event will provide a unique training opportunity for professionals working with young children and their families as well as offer great networking opportunities.  With many agencies and professionals gathered together, we also expect that this event will promote awareness and understanding of regional services and programs.

Throughout the day, the Conference will also host a Marketplace to give participants the opportunity to browse and to purchase educational items such as learning resources, tools for children with special needs, coaching and self-discovery books.

This first time Conference has received a positive response from diverse groups of professionals working with young children and their families.  It has attracted participants from all over Eastern Ontario.  According to Monique Gunn, Division Manager of the City of Cornwall Child Care Services and Chair of the Best Start Network “The response and interest generated by the conference goes way beyond our expectations and reaffirms the genuine interest and commitment by early years professionals to further develop their skills and knowledge to provide children with the best opportunity to succeed and reach their
