When the demolition crews arrived at the Si Miller Arena last year, Chris Rohde decided to pay tribute to the storied rink in his typical fashion – by telling a story with a video camera.

The result was “A Tribute to the Si Miller Arena,” an 8-minute documentary that examines the facility’s storied history and the important role it played in the community.

Created with the help of local sports fan and history buff Thom Racine and the extensive archives from the Cornwall Community Museum, the documentary retraces many of the highlights in the arena’s 70-plus year history, from its construction through community donations in the 1930s to the championship Royals and Colts teams in later years.

The documentary was recently recognized by its peers as TVCOGECO Cornwall received the Outstanding Short Documentary Award for the Si Miller video during the annual TVCOGECO Star Awards in Burlington, Ontario.

The TVCOGECO Star Awards recognizes community programming excellence from across Ontario.

"I was really exciting to win this award," said Mr. Rohde, a Production Assistant with TVCOGECO.

Mr. Rohde was no stranger to the Si Miller Arena. When he was younger, he would often visit the arena to take in events with his late stepfather. Later, through his position with TVCOGECO, he would often find himself at the storied rink on Colts game nights helping to broadcast the match. That tradition of broadcasting Colts games on TVCOGECO continues today on the south side of Water Street at the Cornwall Civic Complex.

“It was definitely a special place,” he said of the Si.

Like Mr. Rohde, Mr. Racine was a familiar face at the Si, be it for calling games, serving as the arena announcer or simply sitting in as a spectator.

“I’m just happy I could be a part of this (documentary),” said Mr. Racine, who’s also a Sergeant with the Cornwall Community Police Service.

The aging Si Miller and Bob Turner arenas were replaced by the Benson Centre, which consists of three ice pads, an indoor soccer fieldhouse and tennis court and numerous community rooms. To honour the storied past of these facilities, the City installed displays with artifacts from both arenas inside the Benson Centre, near the front entrance.
