The Portraits of Honour National Tour arrived in Cornwall on Monday with a goal of honouring Canadian soldiers and raising funds for military families across the country.

Portraits of Honour is national project by Kin Canada honouring those who have fallen in combat during the war in Afghanistan and, by extension, all past, present and future Canadian Armed Forces personnel. The tour is centred on a breathtaking mural featuring the hand-painted portraits of the 156 Canadian soldiers, sailors and aircrew who have lost their lives while serving in Afghanistan.

Artist and Kinsmen Club member Dave Sopha has spent more than two years working on the mural, which measures 10 feet high and 40 feet wide.

“Since he began in December of 2008, Dave has painted an average of 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. Despite efforts to have him slow down, Dave cannot seem to tear himself away from his mural. He feels an overwhelming obligation to each soldier, sailor and aircrew, and to each of their families to make each portrait perfect,” reads a statement on the Portraits of Honour website.

An opening ceremony was held on Monday afternoon at the Cornwall Armoury on Fourth Street East, and that was followed by a fundraising dinner where Sopha served as the guest speaker.

The mural will be open to the public on Tuesday from 7 am to 9 pm at the Cornwall Armoury, and there will be a community breakfast from 7 am to 9 am, a community barbecue from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm and a chicken dinner ($10 per person) from 4:30 pm to 7 pm. Donations are welcome.

The funds raised from the Portraits of Honour tour will support the Military Families Fund and other established military charities to support families of the fallen and to assist the thousands of military personnel who return home with physical or emotional injuries.  Organizers will also seek to fund other charities who offer additional troop and family support that falls outside of the Military Families Fund mandate.
