Cornwall Resident Launches New Community Clean-Up Initiative

Cornwall’s sidewalks and recreational trails are getting some extra attention this year thanks to a new grassroots community initiative.

City resident Daune MacDonald has established the Pathkeepers initiative with a goal of engaging local walkers to do some cleaning up while out for their regular stroll. Mrs. MacDonald is encouraging residents to take a bag with them when they go out for a walk and pick up any litter they may come across.

The “litter walk” concept is quickly catching on. Since announcing her plans, Mrs. MacDonald has already been contacted by more than 20 residents in different parts of the City. Some have expressed interest in being part of the initiative. Others have told her that they have already been doing “litter walks” from time to time.

“It’s (about raising) awareness,” she said. “Once you start seeing litter, it’s hard to just walk by it.”

Mrs. MacDonald believes the initiative will continue to grow as more residents get involved and they in turn engage their friends, family and neighbours to participate as well.

For Mrs. MacDonald, two main areas of focus include Second Street – one of the City’s key arteries – as well as the recreational trail that stretches along Cornwall’s waterfront.

“I commend Mrs. MacDonald for spearheading this great initiative,” said Mayor Bob Kilger. “It’s a great example of residents taking pride and ownership in their community, and it’s great to see.”

Residents who wish to participate in the initiative can contact Mrs. MacDonald at dappled3@bell.net.
