International Boxing Championships to Be Held in Cornwall

March 28, 2012

The Canadian Amateur Boxing Association is holding the "Pan-American" 2012 Women's Elite Continental Boxing Championships at the NAV CENTRE in Cornwall, Ontario, from April 4th to April 7th.

15 countries have registered and close to 150 athletes and officials have confirmed their participation. These championships are being held under International Boxing Association rules, i.e.: the Olympic Games' rules. Confirmed and registered countries include Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Dominica, Ecuador, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Republic Dominican, Saint-Lucia, USA and Puerto Rico.

This is the first time this competition is held in Canada,” said Francis Beaulieu, Project Manager with the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association. “This competition is also a prelude to the last qualifications for the 2012 Olympics in London.”

Ten female boxers from Canada are taking part in the event (ten being the maximum allowed for each entering country). Among them are Mandy Bujold and Mary Spencer, both potential Olympic medallists in London this Summer.

“I am pleased to welcome Boxing Canada, the athletes, and boxing fans to Cornwall,” said Mayor Bob Kilger.  “Cornwall has a rich history in boxing. Best of luck to all athletes - may your experiences in and out of the ring be rewarding!”

The Championships are open to the public and sports fans of all ages are welcome to attend. Passes will be available on site at $25 for the entire competition and at $15 for daily admission. Tickets can also be purchased in advance through our National Office in Ottawa.

The President of the American Boxing Confederation (AMBC), Mr. Doming Solano, will be present, along with an International Technical Official team of seven people, all from Latin America. The AMBC represents forty-four countries throughout the Americas.

Mr Pat Fiacco , the President of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association, who also happens to be the Mayor of the City of Regina,  will be present for the entire competition.
