Doors Open

Nineteen historical sites in Cornwall and the Counties will open their doors to the public for free this weekend as part of the annual heritage celebration known as Doors Open.

“Doors Open is a once-a-year opportunity to experience interesting historical sites, attractions and exhibits free of charge,” said Linda Wilson, Executive Director of Cornwall and the Counties Tourism, which organizes the event.

“One of the best parts of Doors Open is that some of these sites are not typically open for the public to see. There’s a great story waiting behind every door.”

The participating sites are scattered throughout Cornwall and the Counties and include familiar landmarks like the Cornwall Public Library and Lost Villages Museum along with newer venues like the St. Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre. Participants can also enjoy walking tours of Cornwall’s Downtown and Le Village areas as well as historic South Lancaster.

The Cornwall Public Library – which was previously the Federal Post Office building – promises to be a fun site to visit during Doors Open. There will be guided tours of the seldom seen Library basement, which features artifacts from the former Capitol Theatre and a bomb shelter, on Saturday at 10:30 am and 2 pm and Sunday at 1 pm.

Doors Open is sponsored by Cornwall and the Counties Tourism, Heritage Cornwall, Seaway News and Ontario Power Generation.
