Haunted Halloween tours being offered at historic Cornwall Jail

The Cornwall Jail in the United Counties Building

Looking for a Halloween scare? How about a haunted walk through an authentically spooky place – the Cornwall Jail?

The historic facility in Downtown Cornwall will once again be opening its doors for haunted walks in the lead-up to Halloween. The halls of the jails have been decorated with a “Circus Freak Show” theme, and there will be clowns, acrobats and other assorted characters on hand to deliver some added fright.

Judging by past years, the tour can be quite a scary experience.

“Many of the visitors don’t make it all the way through (the tour),” said organizer Lucie Hart. “We have to take them out the side door.”

For those seeking a less frightening experience, there are milder versions of the haunted walk being offered.

A milder version of the walk – which is more suitable young children – will be held on Sunday, October 28th from 11 am to 2 pm. During this time, the jail lights will be on and it will be less frightening than the regular walk, Mrs. Hart said.

The uncensored walk – or Scare Level 3 – will be held on Friday, October 26th, Saturday, October 27th and Sunday, October 28th from 6 pm to 10 pm. It will be offered again on Monday, October 29th and Tuesday, October 30th from 6 pm to 9 pm.

The walk takes about eight minutes to complete, and visitors are led through the site in groups of 6 to 8 people at a time.

Now in its third year, the haunted jail walk is organized by local organization Partir d’un bon pas, and it serves as a fundraiser for other community events throughout the year such as National Child Day.

Admission is $5 and there will also be a barbecue during the events. The Cornwall Jail is located within the United Counties building at the corner of Pitt and Water Streets.

The venue itself is a fitting site for an event of this type. Dating back to the early 1800s, the Cornwall Jail was in operation until 2002. The cell blocks, common areas, exercise yard and visitation area have been maintained as they were when they were populated by inmates sentenced to jail time. It was reopened in 2005 as a tourist attraction and since that time, it has been visited by a number of paranormal investigators. At least one paranormal group, the Canadian Haunting and Paranormal Society (CHAPS), has concluded that the facility is haunted.

The Jail building also doubles as the administrative office for Cornwall and the Counties Tourism.
