Santa Claus Parade

Santa Claus will be stopping down in Cornwall on Saturday, November 17th for a pre-Christmas visit.

The annual Cornwall Santa Claus Parade is being held on November 17th, and over 40 floats, bands and dance groups will join Santa on his march through the city.

The parade will get underway at 5 pm at St. Lawrence Secondary School and head west along Second Street to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 (at the corner of Cumberland Street), where parade participants will be welcomed inside for free hot dogs and hot chocolate.

Parade Committee member Wendy Muir said they have received roughly 40 entries for this year’s parade, and some last-minute entry forms are still trickling in. The theme of this year’s parade is “Twelve Days of Christmas.”

Cornwall's Santa Claus Parade made the switch to become an evening celebration several years ago and for many, it serves as the official kick-off to the holiday season.

For Mrs. Muir, the real joy of the parade comes from watching the young ones.

“It’s just seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces,” she added.

In order to ensure the safety of spectators and parade participants, no traffic will be allowed on the parade route section of Second Street from 4:30 pm until the end of the parade. Also, ‘No Parking’ signs will be erected along the parade route and members of the Cornwall Community Police Service will use their discretion to tow vehicles in contravention of the posted signs.

Officers from the Police Service will be on scene to ensure the safety of the participants and the general public. Detours may be necessary in order to reduce the interaction between vehicles and pedestrians as well as parade participants.

For those who aren’t able to attend the parade in person, TV Cogeco (cable channel 11) will be broadcasting it live.
