Downtown Mural Decked Out For The Holidays

November 20, 2011

The corner of Pitt and Second Streets in Downtown Cornwall has received a colourful festive look for the up-coming holiday season with wreaths and LED lights being added to the mural wall.

“We are very grateful to the Ontario Power Generation and to the Cornwall Home Depot for their contribution to this project. Without them this could not have happened,” said Tony Lacroix, project coordinator for Centretown Cornwall.

“This corner, being one of the key visual points of the area, needed some holiday cheer,” said Councillor Denis Carr, who heads up Heart of the City. “Once the Dominion Place project is completed, the hoarding will be removed. The mural can then be easily re-used in its’ entirety or in other key areas of the city.”

The decor lights-up at dusk and is lit for approximately 8 hours, giving residents of Cornwall ample time in the evenings to enjoy and admire this unique mural with its’ holiday transformation.

“A big thank you goes out to all of the artists, local business and residents who donated time, food, housing and services for this artistic endeavour,” said Bryan Merkley, Chair of Centretown Cornwall.

The mural project was spearheaded and funded by Heart of the City and the Centretown Cornwall revitalization project.

About Centretown Cornwall
Centretown Cornwall is a three-year revitalization project with a focus on the traditional commercial areas of Cornwall. The project is focused on four key areas: economic development, organizational development, marketing and promotions and physical improvements. The name of the project speaks to a larger goal of promoting the Downtown, Le Village, Cotton Mills and Lamoureux Park districts as a single area while still maintaining the individual characteristics of those areas.

The project is being lead by Heart of the City, and other project partners include the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the City of Cornwall, the Downtown Business Improvement Area, Le Village Business Improvement and Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce.
