Summer Reading Club celebrates another successful year

TD Summer Reading Club

The Cornwall Public Library’s TD Summer Reading Club drew to a close on Thursday, August 15th, and there was plenty to celebrate. A total of 367 Cornwall youth enrolled in the club and together, they read a combined 5,527 books over the course of the summer.

Lyne Lapalme, Head of the library’s Children’s Department, and her dedicated staff were kept very busy all summer by listening to verbal book reports and encouraging the club members with incentives and the occasional pat on the back. Smiling and eager faces kept returning to the library to share their stories.

Cornwall Transit once again partnered with the library to offer free rides to reading club members, and it proved to be a hit, with 4,586 Transit rides being provided.

“That’s a new record for (reading club member) rides,” said Len Tapp, Transit Division Manager. “This is a great way for us to promote youth literacy while also showcasing our great service to potential future riders.”

The program wrapped up on a high-note with a season-ending party at the Cornwall Civic Complex on Thursday, August 15th. The closing party featured a performance by a magician prior to the final reading stats being revealed. A grand prize of an iPad Mini was awarded along with numerous secondary prizes and parting gifts.

The TD Summer Reading Club program is sponsored by local businesses and social groups.  The TD Bank is the major sponsor, providing libraries across Ontario with the theme “GO” in 2013 promotional materials.
