Si Miller Demolition To Be Completed By End Of October

October 06, 2011

Demolition of Si Miller Arena

The demolition of the former Si Miller Arena on Water Street is well underway.

On Thursday, October 6, crews from Aim Environmental Group began tearing down the frame of the 75-year-old building, beginning at the north end of the structure near the First Street East entrance to the site.

The lead-up to the demolition began a few weeks ago as crews secured the site and worked to remove items from the building’s interior. Water and hydro to the building was also disconnected.

It’s expected the demolition will be completed by the end of October. As part of the work, the former Glen Theatre building north of the old arena will also be taken down.

Protective fencing has been erected around the demolition site, and motorists and pedestrians are asked to exercise caution while traveling in the area.

Once the demolition is complete, the City of Cornwall will be looking to move forward with the sale of the property to a buyer who is interested in redeveloping the site.

“This is a key piece of land on a key street, and it has great redevelopment potential,” said Stephen Alexander, General Manager of Planning, Parks and Recreation.

Given the size of the site and the higher grading on the northern side, Mr. Alexander said the property could potentially support two separate developments. One scenario could be to introduce a lower-density residential development on the north side of the property near First Street East and a higher-density mixed-use development of office and retail space along Water Street.

As part of the demolition contract, the City made provisions with Aim Environmental Group to remove sections of the wooden bench seating from the former Si Miller Arena.

A limited number of seats will be offered to the public on Saturday, October 8, at the Bob Turner Memorial Centre, beginning at 9 am sharp. The seats will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, and sales will be handled by credit card or cash only.

Single seats will be available for $50 and double seats for $100, with the proceeds going to a special Recreation Fund to assist underprivileged children in accessing municipal recreation programs.

“A number of citizens expressed an interest in acquiring a section of the seats from the Si Miller Arena,” said Christine Lefebvre, Division Manager, Parks & Recreation. “We’re pleased that we will be able to satisfy those requests, and the funds from the sale will be put to good use.”

The Si Miller Arena and Bob Turner Memorial Centre have been replaced by the Benson Centre, a 193,000 square foot multi-sport complex that houses three NHL-sized ice rinks, an indoor soccer field house, indoor tennis court, and community activity rooms.
