Lift-Off returns with four days of fun in Lamoureux Park

Kinsmen Cornwall Lift-Off

Kinsmen Cornwall Lift-Off is back for another year, and the 2013 version of the festival promises to be one of the biggest yet.

The festivities kick off on Thursday, July 11th in Lamoureux Park and continues with four consecutive days of live entertainment, children’s activities, vendors, a midway and, of course, the majestic hot air balloons.

“We’re hoping for good weather and a good turnout,” said Jason Jesmer, Co-Chair of Kinsmen Cornwall Lift-Off.

“We have put together a festival that has something fun for everyone.”

In addition to the familiar attractions that visitors have come to know and love, this year’s Lift-Off festival will also feature a number of firsts. Topping that list is the first-ever country act to grace the Lift-Off stage, headliner Dean Brody on Saturday, July 13th.

Sparticat and the Senators Fun Club will be visiting Lift-Off for the first time on Saturday, and he’ll be bringing a mini rink and a Sparticat slide with him. The TD Family Fun Zone will also feature Lego Playcation on Friday for the young and young at heart. Another new addition will be the Music Zone in Salon B of the Civic Complex, where there will be demonstrations and music jams for those interested in showing off their musical talents. For the car enthusiasts, there will be a classic car show on the launch field in Lamoureux Park on Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm.

The new additions will compliment a busy festival schedule that will see over 25 hot air balloons take to the sky and 30 performers – including headliners Down With Webster, Lou Gramm, Brody and Myles Goodwin and April Wine – take to the stage in Lamoureux Park.

For those looking for some afternoon fun, the activities in the TD Canada Trust Family Zone (near the splash pad) get underway at 12 pm on Thursday and 10 am for the remainder of the festival, while the midway opens at 10 am daily. That will be accompanied by vendors in the park and live music at the bandshell beginning daily at 2:30 pm (and 10 am on Sunday).

The hot air balloon launches – one of the best sights of Lift-Off – are slated for 6:30 pm Thursday, 6:30 am and 6:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday, with a final launch planned for 6:30 am on Sunday. The flights are weather permitting.

Free Cornwall Transit rides
Cornwall Transit will be offering free rides to festival goers who are taking in the sights and sounds at Kinsmen Cornwall Lift-Off in Lamoureux Park. The City transit service will provide free rides to anyone wearing a festival bracelet or bearing a festival ticket (which is redeemed for a bracelet upon entering the park). Children 12 and under can also ride for free if accompanied by an adult with a ticket or bracelet.

The last Cornwall Transit buses will leave the Downtown terminal at Pitt and Second Streets at 11:15 pm each night, providing festival goers with an opportunity to hop on the bus after the nightly entertainment in the park wraps up.

“Cornwall Transit wants to make it easier for people to enjoy this great festival,” said Len Tapp, Transit Division Manager. “Taking the bus is convenient and it’s good for the environment.”

Thing Contest at Cornwall Community Museum
The Cornwall Community Museum is once again hosting the Thing Contest in conjunction with Lift-Off. In this free contest, residents are invited to submit their favourite thing in one of four categories: Oldest Thing, Cutest Thing, Newest Thing and Oddest Thing.

Entries can be submitted in person at the Museum from July 10th to 13th, with judging and display taking place on July 14th. The top entries will win prizes.

The Museum will be open throughout Lift-Off from 10 am to 4 pm, and admission is free.
