Clean Up Begins Early In City Parks Thanks To Favourable Weather

With temperatures rising and spring just around the corner, City crews are now turning their attention to cleaning up after the winter melt.

As spring rolls around, the accumulation of winter’s unsightly garbage gets revealed, and residents and businesses can do their part by helping to pick up litter in the City’s parks and commercial areas.

“We all have a part to play in keeping our community beautiful and litter-free,” said Mayor Bob Kilger.

Typically, City crews are still dealing with snow removal and the dismantling of outdoor rink boards at this time of the year, however the earlier-than-expected thaw has prompted the City to accelerate its efforts.

A number of garbage cans are now in place in the City’s outdoor parks, and additional ones are being fixed up to be placed in the parks and commercial areas later this week and next. Throughout the months of March and April, Parks staff will be picking up litter in parks, painting garbage cans, repairing picnic tables and benches and installing bike racks and flower boxes.

The City’s Recreational Trail and sidewalks are also getting some attention. A sweeper was busy combing off the Recreational Trail in Lamoureux Park on Monday, March 19. Meanwhile, Municipal Works is in the process of sweeping all City sidewalks. That work will continue over the next couple of weeks.

As for City streets, the street sweeper typically only goes into service in mid-April, however given the nice weather, it will likely be put into action by week’s end.

“We have taken the sweeper out of storage and are busy preparing it for work,” said Jean Cousineau, Municipal Works Division Manager. “We plan on sweeping all of the business districts within the next two to three weeks.”
