Cornwall Fire Services has another tool at its disposal to help furry family members in emergencies.

Pumper trucks are now equipped with pet oxygen masks – life-saving devices specifically designed for animals that have been exposed to smoke during a fire.

“Our first priority in the case of fire is always to assist the occupants involved and ensure buildings are cleared. While doing our job though, we often have the opportunity to help pets,” said Firefighter Jeff McIntyre. “We recognize that pets are another important member of the family.”

The reusable masks come in various sizes and are suitable for a variety of animals including dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits and birds. The masks function similarly to regular breathing masks but provide a customized fit for pets, increasing the effectiveness of oxygen delivery.

“Before this donation, we used human oxygen masks on pets distressed by smoke. We have had success in saving pet lives in the past but with this donation, we will be better equipped to give our furry family members the proper oxygen they require,” said Firefighter McIntyre.

The new pet oxygen masks come courtesy of a generous donation by Invisible Fence Gatineau. Since they created the first pet fence in 1973, Invisible Fence Brand has remained committed to saving the lives of pets. Their innovations not only help keep pets happy and safe, but also safe from other hazards like house fires. In most cities, emergency responders lack the equipment to resuscitate and save pets.
