Key Election Dates

Nomination Period - a person may be nominated for an office by filing a prescribed nomination paper in the Clerk's office, during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) on any day prior to Nomination Day in the year of the regular election.

Nomination filing fee is $200 for the office of Mayor; and, $100 for the offices of Councillor and school board Trustee.

On or before June 1, 2014

Clerk shall establish procedures and forms for the use of any voting and vote-counting equipment authorized by by-law, and any alternative method of voting authorized by by-law and provide to all candidates.


On or before July 31, 2014

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation shall provide a Preliminary List of Electors to the City Clerk.


September 2, 2014

Preliminary Voters' List, Map and List of Voting Places will be available at City Hall, 360 Pitt Street, Cornwall.


September 2 to October 27, 2014, before 8:00 p.m.

Eligible electors whose names are not on the voters' list or whose names are shown incorrectly on the list may request to be added to the voters' list or have the information on the list amended by filing an application, along with acceptable identification, with the City Clerk's office or at the voting place.

An individual may make an application to remove an elector's name from the voters' list from Tuesday, September 2 to Friday, September 12, 2014. The City Clerk will determine if the name is to be removed.


September 12, 2014

Nomination Day - 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
City Clerk's Office, City Hall, 360 Pitt Street

Last day for filing or withdrawing nominations or withdrawing from one office, and filing a nomination for another office.


September 12 at 2 p.m. to October 27

Appointment of voting proxy may be made during regular office hours; from noon to 5 p.m. on October 11 at the Advance Poll; and from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Voting Day. Proxy appointment does not remain in force after Voting Day.


September 15, 2014

Certification of Nomination Papers and Acclamation. The Clerk is to certify nomination papers before 4:00 p.m.

After 4:00 p.m., the Clerk shall declare the candidate(s) eligible to be elected.


September 17, 2014

Election Signs may be posted starting on this date.


September 22, 2014

Within 10 days after Nomination Day, the Clerk shall prepare an "interim list of changes" to the Voters' List approved on or before Nomination Day and provide a copy to each certified candidate. Clerk shall provide a final certificate of maximum campaign spending limits to all certified candidates within 10 days after Nomination Day.


Prior to September 27, 2014

Council must pass by-laws establishing:
a) dates for Advance Vote; and
b) hours of operation for all voting places.


October 9 - 21, 2014

Advance Vote: Electors may vote prior to Election Day for any reason from October 9 to 21 as per the schedule.

Candidates may obtain a list of people who voted at the Advance Polls starting October 15, 2014. The list may be picked up at City Hall.


October 27, 2014 Election Day and End of Revision Period

Polls are open 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the exception of institutions and retirement homes that may have reduced opening hours.

October 29, 2014

Declaration of results - Clerk shall, as soon as possible after Voting Day, declare candidates who received the highest number of votes to be elected.


October 30, 2014

Last day to remove election signs.


December 1, 2014

Term of Office commences. The elected members must take the oath of office prior to taking their seat.


December 31, 2014

Election Campaign Period ends. If a candidate has a deficit and notifies the Clerk in writing on or before December 31, the campaign period is extended for a maximum of six months.


March 27, 2015

Financial Statement Filing - date by which a candidate must file a financial statement and auditor's report with the Clerk, on or before 2:00 p.m.

If a financial statement or a request for an extension to campaign is not filed, the successful candidate forfeits office and is ineligible to run for office at the next regular election.


September 25, 2015

Supplementary Financial Statement Filing - date by which a candidate who extended his/her campaign must file a supplementary financial statement and auditor's report with the Clerk, on or before 2:00 p.m.
